Since April 2003, domestic workers have been covered by the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), and as of March 2018, foreign nationals legally employed in South Africa are also included. Any employee working for 24 hours or more in a month must be registered with the UIF. There is a common misconception among employers that only the employee needs to be registered with the UIF. However, it is the responsibility of the employer to register with the UIF as a domestic employer. Subsequently, all employees must be registered under this UIF number. Therefore, an employee who works for multiple employers may have multiple UIF numbers. At Domestic Support, we specialize in managing UIF compliance on behalf of employers, ensuring that all requirements are met and maintained.
The UIF’s purpose is to offer short-term relief to employees who become unemployed due to reasons such as retrenchment, illness, maternity leave, and adoption leave. Additionally, it provides support to dependents of contributors who have passed away.
